XBSS New Teachers Orientation 2017

Fifty new XBSS teachers came together this past weekend at the annual New XBSS Teacher Retreat/Orientation. Attendees ranged from educators just beginning their careers to those with more than 30 years experience, but new to a Xaverian Brothers sponsored school. Our teachers shared time in prayer together, met in groups by the academic subject they are to teach, and listened in whole group settings to a variety of presenters who shared their personal insights on the meaning of a Xaverian Catholic education. A highlight for many participants was the opportunity to hear from students in our Xaverian sponsored schools. Students from Mt. Saint Josephs and Our Lady of Good Counsel eloquently, and oftentimes humorously, shared their thoughts on what a Xaverian school and our Xaverian values has meant to each of them.

The retreat is a wonderful opportunity to discuss in greater depth the Xaverian Charism, our mission, and vision. Our role as collaborators and heirs to the legacy, all while working in inclusive communities, was a prevalent theme throughout. When soliciting feedback on the weekend, one teacher shared “I had no idea what I was getting myself into coming here this weekend - but overall I am so happy to be able to have experienced this to kick off the school year.” Yet another stated, “This was truly an unbelievable experience, and I feel rejuvenated and inspired to be a better teacher, and I will never discount what brought me to this job and this opportunity. Thank you for an awe-inspiring weekend!"

Many thanks go out to the school administrators for supporting their staff’s attendance at this event, and thanks to XBSS teachers/staff who assisted with the retreat (Gail Dennig - St. Johns Prep, Rachel Bruce - Mount Saint Josephs, Robert Gregory - Malden Catholic, Gary Gruneisen - Saint Xavier, & Brother Richard Lunny - XBSS Office)
