Ice Bucket Challenge Continues for St. John’s Prep in Honor of Pete Frates (’03)

Counselors at Camp Christopher honored one of their own by taking the Ice Bucket Challenge this week for Pete Frates '03, who was a counselor at Camp Chris during his high school days at the Prep.

Leading the charge with camp director Joe Lovett was Amanda Magnan, now a camp supervisor who was a co-counselor with Pete. Before tipping their buckets, the crew challenged Pete's fellow counselors—Nick Borseti '03, John McCarthy '04, Steve Van Note '03, and Coach Jim O'Leary's daughter, Emily O'Leary—to take the plunge next.

Children from camp jumped into the action, too, cheering the counselors on as they dumped icy water on their heads. Everyone was proud to be a part of continuing Pete's personal mission to fight ALS. Watch video here!

“At Camp Christopher we not only have fun in a beautiful, safe environment, but we hope our campers leave us as better people, reinforcing the values they learn at home,” said Mr. Lovett. “That is why when Peter Frates was a counselor I was happy to have my son in his group. We wanted to honor Peter for consistently making the world a better place by supporting him and his family in their campaign against ALS.”

Seniors attending the Prep Leadership Institute (PLI) last week also demonstrated Pete’s spirit of zeal when they took on the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness and funds for ALS in support of Pete, Jim Daly ’71, Brother Raymond Hoyt, C.F.X. and all those who have been affected by the disease. See pictures from PLI here! The Class of 2018 stood next to Headmaster Hardiman as they all doused themselves in ice water—for a great cause inspired by an even greater person.
