Archdiocese of Boston Honors Malden Catholic’s Angela Lee

The Catholic Schools Office Honors Angela Lee

The Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Office, with support from the Catholic Schools Foundation, is excited to announce Angela Lee as one of the first recipients of the prestigious Archdiocese of Boston Excellence in Education Award. This annual award honors elementary and secondary school teachers’ commitment to developing saints and scholars in the Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Boston. Lee will receive $1,500 and be honored at a luncheon in May with Cardinal Seán O’Malley and Superintendent of the Archdiocese of Boston Catholic Schools Kathy Mears.

As a 36-year veteran of the English Department at Malden Catholic High School in Malden, MA, Angela Lee has been an influential part of many students’ lives. Through various changes in staff and administration over the years, her commitment to the school has never wavered.

Lee attended elementary school at Cheverus Catholic School in Malden and secondary school at their now closed all-girls school. She continued the tradition when her two sons, Matthew and Joshua, enrolled as elementary students. They later attended Malden Catholic for their secondary education. She and her family are shining examples of commitment to Catholic education.

Rising through the ranks of the English Department, Lee has served as their Chairperson for the past 25 years. Having taught all grade levels and dealt with students of varying abilities, she is comfortable working with the most advanced reader and the student who struggles. As one of her administrators likes to say, “She knew differentiation before we gave it a name!” Her tireless efforts to ensure all students achieve their personal best and to create life-long learners are inspiring.

Lee is a key participant in creating a faith-filled community at Malden Catholic. She has been active in Campus Ministry activities and served as the moderator of the National Honor Society for 20 years. Lee is also the Yearbook and Christian Service moderator. In addition to serving as English Department Chairperson, she continues to teach Advanced Placement, Test Prep, and summer school classes.

Despite her many commitments to Malden Catholic, she continues to be a presence at Cheverus as well. When her sons attended the school, she held the roles of Vice-President and President of the Parent-Teacher-Organization. During the past four years, she has served as the Secretary of the Consultative Board. Lee has served on the Gala Committee and currently serves on the Executive, Sponsorship, and Media Presentations Committee.

Administrators, staff, pastors, parents and students were encouraged to nominate excellent teachers in their schools. The Excellence in Education Award’s selection committee, comprised of teachers and principals in the Archdiocese and members of the Catholic Schools Office, read all nominations and interviewed the finalists to identify ten exemplary educators. The committee received over 115 nominations for excellent teachers in the Archdiocese of Boston.

“This year’s award winners represent extraordinary teachers who go above and beyond every day to educate our students. They are committed to developing saints and scholars,” said Kathy Mears. “These awards shine a bright light on the incredible work happening in our schools. On behalf of the Catholic Schools Office and the Catholic Schools Foundation, we applaud the recipients for their initiative, innovation and commitment.”

Mike Reardon, Executive Director of the Catholic Schools Foundation, said, “Teachers are at the heart of Catholic education and CSF is honored to help support the Excellence Awards and recognize a few of these amazing women and men. We are grateful to share in the work that they do each day in classrooms across the Archdiocese.”
